Board of Directors
Phyllis
Buchanan brings more than 25 years of experience with the DuPont
Corporate Education Program to her current position as Manager of the
Office of Education. During her years of service, Ms. Buchanan has
overseen Corporate support for science education and leading edge
research at the university level; has identified and contributed to the
development of national programs that promote young people’s interest in
science and technology; and has repositioned significant Office of
Education resources to the support of K-12 science and mathematics
education reform.
The Office of Education’s specific charge is to seek out and support
initiatives and programs that will improve the quality of science and
mathematics education for young students. In addition, DuPont provides
grants and support for student groups and teachers who have
traditionally avoided studies in scientific and technological subjects.
In managing the Office of Education’s ambitious agenda, Ms. Buchanan
weaves together an extensive network of alliances, partners across all
educational levels, and engages DuPont as a catalyst for educational
reform and improvement. At the national level, the Office of Education
conducts The DuPont Challenge Science Essay Awards Program and supports
a range of additional science and mathematics education programs for
K-12 students and their teachers, including Science Olympiad, the
Keystone Science School, the MATHCOUNTS Problem of the Week, and FIRST:
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. In 1995,
DuPont launched an Elementary Science Initiative in Delaware, a
comprehensive program for reform that includes inquiry centered
approaches for K-8 science curricula and assessment, teacher
professional development, cost-effective materials, and strategies for
ensuring school and community support. Today, the Office of Education
has expanded the Elementary Science Initiative to reach additional
school systems in states nationwide.
Ms. Buchanan is a member of the Delaware Valley Science Fairs, Inc.,
Board of Trustees; the FIRST Philadelphia Regional Advisory Board
(Drexel University); the National Science Resources Center’s National
LASER Advisory Board; and is a Lead Partner and Corporate Sponsor for
the South Carolina and the Tri-States LASER sites. She is a contributing
organizer for the Science Olympiad National Tournament, to be hosted by
the University of Delaware in 2002, and a member of the Selection
Committee for the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce Superstars! In
Education recognition. A graduate of Widener University (B.S. in
Management Information Systems and M.Ed. in Elementary Education), Ms.
Buchanan continues to work collaboratively with teachers and educators
in a number of states, including Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and
South Carolina, and she encourages all DuPont employees to contribute
expertise and resources to improve science and mathematics education.
