Board of Directors
Diane Schaefer is the
Director of the Office of Instruction at the Rhode Island Department.
She has been at the Department of Education for 17 years, three years as
Director and 14 years as the State Mathematics Supervisor. She is
responsible for leading and supporting schools and districts in the
areas of curriculum, instruction and assessment. Some of her current
work include the development of Statewide Curricula, Grade Level
Expectations (GLEs) and Grade Span Expectations (GSEs) for Mathematics,
Science, and English Language Arts, and collaboration with the Office of
Higher Education to address the Governor's Blue Ribbon Panel Action Plan
on PK-16 Mathematics and Science Education.
Other initiatives, which
Dr. Schaefer oversees, include the USDOE Mathematics Science Partnership
(MSP), Reading First, and the development of state policy for the
various content areas. She is on the Board of Balanced Assessment in
Mathematics and the current President of the Association of State
Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM). Prior to working at the Department,
Dr. Schaefer taught secondary mathematics and elementary grades for 17
years. She holds an Ed.D. from Boston University and an M.S. from the
University of Rhode Island.
