3M and the 3M Foundation are committed to supporting innovative and practical initiatives which enhance the quality of life in 3M communities around the world. With the goal of helping to develop productive, educated and involved citizens, 3M targets programs that address related education, family, and community issues. Science and math education and youth development are top priorities. In addition to education, 3M also supports health and human services, the arts, and environmental efforts.

Much of 3M's giving is accomplished in conjunction with employees and retirees. The company and its employees together support the United Way. Over the years, combined employee, retiree, and corporate gifts have raised more than $85 million for local United Way campaigns. 3M employees and retirees also link arms in times of local and worldwide disasters, sending cash and 3M products, and volunteering time. 3M also encourages and supports employee and retiree volunteers through its Volunteer Match program. Since the program's inception in 2000, more than $1 million has been distributed to organizations in nearly all states.
